Porters Poetry/Anthology Project: Yileen Press, in partnership with the Mountain Fund and various agencies around the world, are combining to create a Porters Poetry/Anthology which will resemble a similar edition published in 2003 by Porter’s Progress, Nepal. As where “Two fists of breath” only covered poetry and from mountain porters in Nepal, this new edition will take on a broader format and will include pieces of work by porters in Nepal as well as Tanzania and possibly Peru. This edition is also planned to have a forward containing information about the issues surrounding porters, contact information for the various agencies supporting porter’s right such, in addition to the poems, drawings, and songs by the porters themselves.
To date the project has received some 38 poems from Nepal and 41 writings/drawings from the Tanzania. We have also received a few amazing original watercolors from an artist in Nepal which will be used for the cover art. However, enough is never enough. So, after a conversation with Scott, Mountain Fund, it was suggested that I post a description as well as needs of the project on this blog. I’m now hoping the climbing/trekking community might be able to help finalize this amazing project.
Yileen Press is requesting assistance in securing works of art, writing (poetry, shorts stories, songs) or similar from porters in the mountain regions of the world. Of particular interest would be submissions from porters working in Peru. In addition, Yileen Press would consider publishing a few stories (1500 – 2000 word limit) detailing some trekkers experiences with porters. All submissions should be forwarded no later than July 31, 2007. All submissions as well as questions can be sent to my attention at – tammy@mountainfund.org. We are also looking for a title for this edition – so send in your suggestions. Looking forward to hearing from you !!
